UK supermarket chain Tesco has this Dell “Inspiron Z530″ laptop up for sale on their website: it’s got a 12.1-inch screen, is Atom Z350-powered and sounds a lot like the Dell E-Slim mini laptop we’ve mentioned before. The product’s features are touted thus: “Ultra mobile web experience. Consume your media where ever you are,” which sounds all well and good, but then it goes a bit funny with a “Linux Ubunto” OS and a width and height of “29.9 cm”. Techies and moneybag VCs had to make some tough decisions about next week. It’s the dilemma of the ages: To attend the DEMOfall08 conference or TechCrunch50?
And then, of course, there’s the CTIA Wireless and I.T. and Entertainment conference later in the week, and the surprise Apple event scheduled for Sept. 9. Good luck to anyone who attempts all four.
“I spent a lot of time figuring out how to deal with this fairly complicated situation, and ultimately I decided to go to DEMO,” says Harry McCracken, editor of Technologizer and former editor of PC World. “If I could, I would go to both shows. But for me, the most significant difference between the two is that TechCrunch is focused entirely on Web 2.0, and while DEMO has that, it’s more wide ranging.”
The decision, says McCracken, was complicated by the “feud” between DEMO executive producer Chris Shipley and Michael Arrington, editor of TechCrunch. [Arrington says DEMO is a “payola” scheme. Shipley says Arrington is driven by competitive interests.]
“I was worried that people would interpret whatever I did as a statement about picking sides,” says McCracken. “Ultimately I’ll go to the show that’s most useful to me as a journalist.”
Both the TechCrunch and DEMO conferences promise to be inside-basebally events with entrepreneur/blogger/pundits taking the stage with other entrepreneur/reporter/blogger/pundits. (Is there anyone in tech who doesn’t qualify as a talking head these days?)
On Team DEMO you’ve got Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg (of allthingsd.com) and Matt Marshall (of Venture Beat). You’ve also got a slew of big thinker types, like Howard Bloom and Prabhakar Raghavan, Yahoo’s research chief.
Team TechCrunch, by contrast, has Ashton Kutcher, former analyst turned blogger Henry Blodget, semi-reluctant pundit Marc Andreessen, loudmouth billionaire Mark Cuban, rock star venture capitalist Ron Conway, and the token woman, Marissa Mayer.
It was the crowd that sold David Marcus on TechCrunch50. After attending last year, Marcus, the founder and CEO of Zong decided to pay a little under $10,000 (he got a discount) to exhibit at the conference.
“We had limited bandwidth and we couldn’t do both shows. We went to TechCrunch last year, and it was of great value because of the focus and the crowd,” says Marcus.

The two major-party presidential candidates, Barack Obama and John McCain, both expressed general support for the move today, while reserving the right to quibble over the yet-to-be officially unveiled details.
But Barr, not surprisingly, will have none of all this. And he made that crystal-clear in several sharply worded quotes that were part of a release his campaign has released:
Congress set up the taxpayers for big losses when it established these quasi-government agencies to subsidize the housing industry, and then earlier this year voted to approve direct federal support for them. Policymakers should learn from the latest financial disaster and say never again. …
… First, government subsidizes an industry. Then, after the industry crashes, government bails it out! The one factor that never changes is: the taxpayers lose. …
… It is time to say no more. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac need to be privatized and sold off. And Congress must stop treating the federal government like a national soup kitchen for businesses in trouble.
Just asking: Who is the “agent of change” on this matter?

how multitudinous generations does it take before you can officially invoke something a one’s own flesh tradition? if the answer is two, then we partake of a genealogy convention of poetry lullabies for our children. my mom hand-me-down to tattle me to sleep, even when i was seven and eight, with a collection of quirky lullabies: moon river, your performance, you’ve got a friend, and one i called baby bye. it was always my favorite and suited my mom’s arcane alto well. when i was six or so, as we were walking down the road, i asked her where the song was from, since i had heard the other ones on the radio, but never baby bye. so mom told me that it was my special lullaby, she had written it just for me. it’s a simple song, not completely extensive with a chorus, but when i had babies of my own, it was the first to-do that i sang to them.i didn’t mean to make a family tradition by writing a lullaby for each of my own kids, it just courteous of happened. they are precisely own, due type my kids. doogie’s has a line “everyone else in the world is asleep, except with a view you my newborn sweet,” because he never did sleep…ever. i could tell you what was on tv at any given time of the broad daylight because i was at all times awake with him. molly’s starts out “pretty baby, don’t you cry,” because she was a pretty newborn, and all she in any case did was sob. mia’s song is a little contrasting. toward the purpose of my pregnancy, i was taking a shower and relishing the feel of the water when i found myself humming a melody i’d not heard before. and the rhythm just happened to fit the nickname we had decided on for the baby. we had picked out the name amelia isabelle, but planned on m?tier her mia belle, and the song’s opening notes fit unambiguously. by the time i got out of the shower, the water was eat one’s heart out cold, and i had composed her entire song. i read somewhere, don’t remember where or when, that an african tribe has a usage of writing a song for each coddle, because they believe that each child has their own personal strain. i regard as it’s a beautiful belief, and supports zephaniah 3:17 that says that deity rejoices over each of us with singing. i bet that he has a performance for each of us. mia gets a lullaby every night earlier bed, and she has two favorites: mia belle and the lullaby we share baby bye. i hope that when my children sing their own babies to sleep at night they will would rather three lullabies to share. mine, theirs, and one created just for their little one.the painter from shanghai by jennifer cody epstein is the story of famed chinese artist puss yuliang. if the book was fiction (it is a fictionalized biography), it would be outrageous to take it that it’s true. yuliang was sold into a bagnio at the duration of 14 by her opium-addict uncle. the lover initially believed that she was going to do embroidery to maintenance the family. trained by the brothel’s top girl, she shuts down her emotions in order to deal with daily degradations. at seventeen, she meets a republican certified, pan zanhua, who quickly makes her his concubine, and eventually second wife. zanhua supports her interest in art and allows her to enter art school, even when it endangers his dispose with the government. yuliang continues to save up her emotions veiled and alone allows them to make an appearance through her artwork, diverse of which are self-portrayal nudes. yuliang’s story takes place on the thorough-going canvas of chinese civil campaign and the japanese transgression. as as her home country tries to shape its new uniqueness (making the book very timely), yuliang has to determine her own as well. epstein tackles this amazing biography deftly and with compassion, yuliang suffered much, torn between cunning and thing embrace and was deeply scarred by the sexual abuse she faced concerning three years. many artists have faced yen crave and poverty, but yuliang faced so much more, the reader can’t eschew but be awed by the obstacles she faced and overcame, including the destruction of an entire exhibition by anti-communist forces. the book is well-written and compelling.the winners of this week’s contest were amanda rice and karen lasater. congratulations you two! i’m starting another contest next week, so make dependable you stop back then! today’s pic is of my pretty baby, molly, and me from camp.

most likely you’ve read a list or seen a movie, maybe even both. ever read a screenplay though? it’s a movie visually told and is broken into scenes. here’s a sample from training day by david ayer:int. coffee shop - day the waitress pours refills. alonzo reads. jake fidgets.jake sure wouldn’t tell off not roasting in a hot treacherous and white all summer.alonzo sighs, carefully folds his paper. glares at jake.alonzo grass on me a piece, hoyt.jake my story?alonzo not your parable. a story. you can’t retain your mouth shut want passably to let me finish my paper. so tell me a story.the heading can either say int. or ext which means interior or shell. this is inside a coffee look for so it states int. also this is followed by time of day, either evening or heyday. under the heading is vim and dialog.ever notice how multitudinous movies have coffee shop scenes? there’s a lot, cause that’s where writers spend a lot of time and it rubs slow in movies. so starbucks owes writers some royalties. that’s my theory anyway.try reading ditty by clicking on online scripts in the link section.
